Books, I found, had the power to make time stand still, retreat or fly into the future.

Reading is essential for future success. We will be reading short stories and novels, mysteries, horror, adventure, realistic fiction, historical fiction, literary nonfiction, informational nonfiction, and more. Reading is a never-ending journey of growth and learning. Our goal for each student is to read 30 books this year. Students will have a great deal of choice in the novels they read.
We will focus on Before / During / After Comprehension Strategies (finding main idea, using context clues, predicting, recognizing cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, discerning fact from opinion, summarizing, paraphrasing, making inferences, and using figurative language) for reading fiction and the Power Strategies for reading nonfiction (recognizing content/specialized vocabulary, using text features, recognizing text structures, monitoring understanding, previewing text, activating background knowledge, questioning, noting, organizing and retrieving information). |
